About Nausea/Vomiting

Possible causes:

  • Brain tumour with raised intracranial pressure, obstruction of the intestines by tumour, reaction to chemotherapy or radiation therapy, side effects of medications
  • Constipation
  • Severe pain
  • Severe cough
  • Electrolyte imbalance in the body
  • Psychological factors such as nervousness

Medical Treatment

  • Healthcare professionals will provide appropriate treatment based on the causes of the patient’s symptoms
  • Doctors will prescribe anti-vomiting drugs if necessary. Please take the drugs half an hour before meal times

Non-medical Treatment

  • Some patients prescribed with opioids may have nausea when they first take the medications. However, the early nausea or vomiting from opioids tend to subside in a few days. Doctors can prescribe anti-vomiting drugs in this transient period
  • Take small frequent meals, avoid irritating or unpleasant odour
  • Try to prepare a small bowl of food at a time and refill it after you have finished eating to create a sense of accomplishment
