About Coughing

Irritation of the respiratory tract may cause coughing, such as:

  • Asthma, nasal reflux, acid reflux
  • Respiratory tract infection
  • Tumour obstructing the trachea
  • Pulmonary oedema

Medical Treatment

  • Healthcare professionals will provide appropriate treatment based on the causes of the symptom
  • Depending on the clinical conditions, doctors will use medications to control the cough symptom. The medications used are based on the causes of cough and the amount of sputum and patients should comply with the prescriptions
  • Patients with blood in sputum should take haemostatic agents as prescribed

Non-medical Treatment

  • Avoid factors that cause cough, such as cold air, cold drinks or foods containing fruit acids
  • If the coughing continues, notify the healthcare professionals for assistance
