About Abdominal Distension

Possible causes

  • Ascites (Abdominal build up of fluid in the abdomen)
  • Tumour in the abdominal or pelvic cavity, or tumour in the liver which reduces space for the stomach
  • Some patients who stay in bed for a long time may have symptoms of constipation and abdominal distension

In case of any symptoms, notify the healthcare professionals for follow up immediately.

Medical Treatment

  • Healthcare professionals will provide appropriate treatment based on the causes of the symptoms, such as constipation, and ascites
  • If indicated, doctor will prescribe medication

Non-medical Treatment

Dietary and daily habits

  • Eat smaller meals
  • Try to eat more slowly and chew carefully
  • Avoid foods that may produce gas (such as beans, onions, potatoes and sweet potatoes) and foods that contain coarse fibres (such as bamboo shoots and celery)
  • Eat less fatty food
  • Exercise and walking can reduce abdominal distension
  • Keep bowel movements smooth
